Rochester, NY – Our Back-Yard part 12 of 14

Hello again everyone.  It is so nice to see you visiting and commenting on our journey around Rochester, NY and here we go with part 12.

Today we would like to share with you snow lovers and those of you living in warmer regions that may be craving snow, (lol) what’s been happening around here and the Rochester Snow Totals at present.  We went to bed with a few snow flakes floating in the air and 6 hours later woke to 18 inches of this fluffy white stuff.  It sure was pretty but left Rochester and surrounding communities at a stand still.  It sure was nice knowing we didn’t have to be anywhere and Emma was in her glory.  Even though it is pretty we’ve had 4 months of cold and snow so we are looking forward to spring coming soon, lol.

We hope you enjoy the pictures of the area and video of Emma playing Frisbee in this magnificent winter wonderland experience.  Don’t forget if you click on a photograph it will expand to full screen and you can view all of them in full splendor as a slideshow.

Let’s go play in the snow.

Some interesting tidbits about Rochester and the area are,

  • The man, William Seward Burroughs, who invented the ‘calculating machine,’ now more complex and known as the calculator, was from Rochester.
  • The average cost of a funeral is $4,200., gas $2.41., house $125,000., Income $66,365., Rent $800., home owners insurance $856. And car insurance $986.

  1. Not sacrilegious at all, Emma – totally on target. If not for Tink I don’t know how I’d make it through the day.
    xx,
    mgh

Ya’ got that right Mom! Now let’s go to BED. It’s been a long day and tomorrow will be another. Do I have to pull the cord out of the wall?

  2. WOL, I sure can hear ya Tink. Our peoples really do need us to keep them moving in the right direction. Sometimes I feel like mine get a little annoyed from time to time when I take my Frisbee and poke em in the leg over and over. Most always I win em over with my eyes and out the door we go for a round of catch the bird, aaah I mean the Frisbee. We got a tough job Tink but the rewards are great. I just look around on our walk abouts at some of my dawg brothers and sisters and see em chained to a little shanty with an empty bowl tipped over in the dirt. Please don’t think I’m being sacrilegious when I note that our name spells god in reverse. That helps me know I need to love em like God loves us, wol.

  3. Yeah – I try to play with Mom indoors when we can’t go outside (its cold again today but we did take a real short walk anyway). She never appreciates my insistance nearly enough. Somebody needs to get her off that computer once in a while! Without me I don’t know if she’d ever do anything else some days.

  4. Yes, isn’t it great how when we go places peoples have special treats tucked away for us. Wow, that had to be one special treat if it had to be broken in to 3 servings. Then again I gotta member you have a tiny mouth unlike mine. I would have gulped that down in one breath. I guess I still have that deep fear that someone will take it. I guess humans aren’t the only one with fears, woof, woof. Isn’t it fun getting out and about. We was out the other day in the park and it was warm and everyone was happy cuz it was nice out. We heard its gonna be snowy again around here too. I’m okay with it cuz I’m happy whatever the time or weather but I know my peoples are tired of it. Just another example of the awesome job us doggies have in helping our peoples remain joyful in ALL things. Woof.

  5. I wag for treats – and when my fans greet me at my Cheers bar – and during cuddle time every night.

Guess what? Mom had to go a-l-l the way to the bank at the far side of town and she took me with her! The bank 2-legses keeps treats for dogs and I got one that was so big my mom had to break it into 3 pieces – and I got every single piece!

It was a long, long walk with tons of new smells — and I only had to get into my carrier ONCE, when she made a quick stop at the store after that.

The weather was warm and beautiful almost all the way, and the rain didn’t come until we were just about home a few minutes ago. I didn’t even get wet enough for Mom to have to use a towel.

GREAT day for dogs! But Mom said that winter is coming back for a few days – maybe even more snow. She’s worried about the trees and bushes with new pink and white and yellow leaves and the flowers that just started to peek through. I guess they don’t get sweaters or coats like us, huh?

  6. Isn’t it so nice when our peeps shower us with their love…. of course we deserve every ounce of it WOL. After all we keep them safe and lead them places for purposes of them seeing new things and meeting new peoples. With my short hair I dry off pretty quick but I still like the rub down, don’t we all? I know what you mean by the noisy wind thing cuz my mom uses one. And the brushing is the best. My tail doesn’t stop wagging the whole time. Do you wag your tail a lot?

  7. Swimming? That sounds like fun. I only know about getting all wet during bath time.

When it’s warm outside our little lake nearby is full of algae and there are always 2-legses with sticks and strings around it all the time, so Mom keeps me on my leash when we walk there. I’ve never gotten a chance to swim in it. But Mom loves to do that dry-off thing after my baths (shhhh – don’t remind her). Then she blows on me with that noisy thing with the warm air – THEN I have to get combed out again.

Oh well, I get the best treats when we’re done, so it’s all good!

  8. I don’t like going out in the rain. Its amazing how long I can hold my business when it suits me. Sometimes thought they like walking in the rain and make me go. As for swimming… they take me all the time to this park that has a stream. They throw a stick out there and I’m gone to get it. Sometimes my people daddy even wades out with me and we get all wet together. Mommy always likes drying me off like I’m a 1 year old. Oh well, it makes her feel good.

  9. Mom’s waiting for the sky to get pretty again or for the rain to slow down before we go back out. She took too long getting dressed for a walk. (Do you understand this bit about fast and slow rain? I do not.)

But I guess she won’t let me play in the long wet grass in the front yard today. ::sigh:: She’s been at me with the comb and brush (as if I didn’t know the next thing was a bath!) — and she says she doesn’t want to have to start all over. Darn!

She gave me a shorter haircut, but it’s still long enough to get matted every day. As long as she doesn’t have to take me someplace to get shaved, I try to put up with it.

Do you have to get all your mats out before you can get wet?

  10. I know your Mom is right and its right in line with what my people mom tells him all the time. Its just my people dad is such a push over when I cock my head and look at him with my chocolate eyes. I’ve got him trained but don’t tell on me okay. My peoples wont give me chocolate either… they say its bad for me, huh there goes that web thing again. I think its really that my people mom likes her dove chocolates and doesn’t want to share em. My people daddy is always teasing my mom about getting her enrolled in choco-holics-anonynmous wol. Ain’t it fun walking in the rain. Put your hoody up so you don’t catch cold.

  11. You’re lucky you still get sneaked morsels from time to time. Mom would make your dad stop feeding you from the table forever – she says she has her ways – bol.

I seem to be able to eat little bits of everything – and sometimes Mom even adds things she says I can’t eat after she saves a little bit for me (I never get to even taste mushrooms, onions or garlic – or chocolate, because she hogs it all).

When I lived with my brothers and sisters, our then mom started us out with tiny bits of veggies and fruits as treats, and Mom thinks that’s why I can eat so many things today. I don’t care WHY as long as I get to have them!

I wish she’d stop mixing the good stuff into those dry health food chunks she insists I eat, tho’. But no look I’ve tried so far has gotten her to stop that nonsense, so I have to eat what she fixes. Eventually.

Gotta’ GO – she changed her shoes, so I think we’re heading outside before it starts to rain again.

  12. Ummm isn’t licking the plate the best. I don’t get to do it much. My people daddy allowed me once to lick the plate of a tiny bit of spaghetti sauce but my people mommy asked him not to do it. Yeah, they are always checking that darn net thing for things I can eat… don’t they know I’m a dog and just want to eat everything, WOL. I like veggies too but once I ate a carrot and well ummm lets just say they don’t give me em anymore. I use to like getting my kong stuffed with peanut butter but my peoples discovered (darn net again) that it gives me gas. I didn’t mind it but they sure did. I just know I likes food. I understand what your mommy is doing by not letting you get bad manners by begging at the table cuz it ain’t right. My people mommy is always talking to my people daddy about not doin it. So at dinner I sit on the other side of him cuz he sneaks me little morsels. I’ve learned if I cock my head a bit and put on my little puppy pouting look he melts everytime. Hey, sometimes a girl gots to work the crowd. I know its not right but i’m a dog, wol, wol.

  13. Mom doesn’t eat anything like that anymore – not since before I was born. But I sometimes get to lick her plate – she put in on the floor right next to the sink before she puts it in the soap (only if I’m really good and don’t beg while she’s eating). She hardly ever leaves any scraps of food (darn it!), but I know just what you mean about those oils. SO yummie.

I sometimes get little pieces of real apple or pear as a treat – and yesterday I got my first taste of something she called a camel-lope. Besides peanut butter, I like the foods that crunch the best – but that camel one was pretty darned amazing anyway. And when it gets hot we’ll have watermelon again. That’s THE best.

Tell your 2-legses to google “can dogs eat …” first. Some 2-legses food can make 4-legses really sick. But it turns out that its good for most of us to have little bits of a bunch of things they eat — most vegetables and even some things she says aren’t really good for anything but a taste treat, like bits of cheese sometimes !!!! (I really love cheese).

And even though she always tries to hide my worm pills in a piece of hot dog, sometimes I don’t even care – she hardly ever lets me have those hotdogs. (They’re not made of real dogs, btw).

  14. Does you people let you lick the foil wrapper of the breakfast bars? When we are on the road this is my morning treat, wol. I lay down and lick the foil till all the oils are gone, apple ones are the best, WOL.

  15. I don’t think I’m more gentle, I just have a smaller mouth and tiny teeth. You should see what I can do to PAPER!

I’ve accidentally torn up a few of my baby toys, and destroyed a couple of squeakers in a couple of bigger ones, but the only way I can make toys disappear is to bury them under the couch cushions. Mom hardly ever checks there. 🙂

  16. I luv them squeaky toys. I like to consider myself the Houdoggie of making em disappear. Because of it though my peoples don’t give em to me much anymore. Sounds like you’re more gentle on em? Some of my toys disappear and suddenly reappear too. I know where I leave em but when I return they’re gone. When I get em back I act like its brand new again and it makes em smile thinking they got one over on me, wol.

  17. Mom goes to these after Christmas sales, so I have a whole bunch of Santas and elves and candy canes and gingerbread people that squeak and rattle. So I do have a lot of toys – but I don’t get to play with all of them every day. Different toys come out and disappear all the time. Weird!

She doesn’t give me many rawhide chewies either, because she says it’s not good for me to eat them. But boy do I love to chew on carrots! When she goes out without me she leaves me with a whole big one sometimes.

  18. Wow sounds like you got lots of neat toys. Friends gave me a rawhide chew toy recently and I mauled one nice chunk out of it. Mommy went oh no you cant have that and when she reached for it I swallowed that bugger real quick. It was slow to go down. Now I know what a boa constrictor must feel like after eating something big, wol. They haven’t given me another chew toy like that again, silly peoples. Oh well I chew the nubs off my Nyla bone though.

  19. I like all my indoor toys, especially the fuzzy ones that still have squeakers that actually squeak. I also have some antlers and fake pigs ears I chew on – but I like the chew sticks I can actually eat a lot better. And Greenies. I love it when I get those Greenies!!

  20. LOL, you are sharp Tink. You gotta let your peoples know the importance of being prepared to give when they take. We doggies are always such givers aren’t we and sometimes it okay to want something back…. WOL. My prized toys are my Nyla bone, my 2 Frisbees and my bandanas I wear on trips.

  21. Today was finally warmer so we could go outside to get in some practice. I’m still not catching it, tho’ I’m great at grabbing it where it lands and running it back. I’m no fool tho’ — if she wants me to drop it, she’d better have another one to throw!

I found my perfect one at the dog park – but Mom called some 2-legs to come get it. She didn’t even know it was missing. Can you imagine?

Anyway, she told Mom how to buy some brand new ones for me, so I have one big one and 2 little ones from when I was a puppy. They are my favorite toys – but my indoor toys are pretty cool too.

  22. Woof, Woof Tink. There is a doggone knack to teaching our peoples how to play with that disk they call a Frisbee. Its taken me months to have they understand they have to take into consideration our weight, height, bite size and the list goes on… The disk they first bought was one they thought was perfect. It wasn’t until we were on one of our road trips that I found one abandoned at a park and it had all the right aerodynamic engineering. Then it was game on!!!! I’m still teaching them to lead me just a little over my head because I’m not seeing as well as I was when younger. I give em credit though cuz every once in awhile they soar it perfectly and I snatch it just like you see them chocolate lobbies going after that bird soaring. Doggone it feels good to snatch it and return it without too many teeth marks in it, WOL. Keep working with your people cuz I sense she wants to learn how to play catch the Frisbee with you Tink.

  23. Wow, Emma – you play with your frisbee like I do! The top of our snow is always crunchy, so my little legs get stuck, even if we don’t get nearly as much snow at one time as as you do. Sure looks like fun for you, but it would probably bury me alive!

Your frisbee is different, too. Mine are mostly some kind of fabric, ‘specially designed for dogs with little mouths (and little teeth – you’d tear up my kind in a heartbeat, not even meaning to). Say thanks to Tom and Audrey for the video of you – their furry readers want more Emma!

  24. Oh, how our Shadow loved to chase the groundhogs back under the shed, too. He was with us just two weeks shy of his 15th birthday. He was definitely part of the family and my best bud. 🙂 I’ll be looking for him someday at Rainbow Bridge!

  25. We are so sorry that Shadow is not with you any longer. Its comforting though someday we’ll be reconnected. We find so much joy watching animals and their peoples interacting. Emma sure does make us smile and keeps us going. There is something about labs and snow, water, butterflies and anything that keeps them moving, lol.

  29. WOW, wat a lot of snow, Emma loves it and it is very nice to see. My little dog from 3 kg. is not so happy when there is a lot of ice on the way she is walking and I agree 😉 I’m so glad the winter is over Tom and Audrey, The flowers are blooming and today it was 12 degrees celcius, de first butterfly was in the garden and the birds are very busy, I love Spring! The cost of a funeral is more expensive, Cremation is cheaper. Rent of my house is about € 6.500. Car Insurance is about € 300,– but the income from the old age pension is about € 13,000,–. (including the bonusses for rent and healthfund), and then all the other things, like gas, electricity, water supply and insurances. When you’re old in the Netherlands it is not possible to take a hollyday, but we can eat en drink.
