Rochester, NY – Our Back-Yard part 09 of 14

Welcome back fellow bloggers and followers.  Once again, it’s nice to see you visiting to follow the journey around our hometown, Rochester, NY part 09.

Lower and Middle Falls, Genesee River, Rochester, NY

Our tour of Rochester took us to the Lower and Middle Genesee Falls. We must admit however that in our years of living in this region we had never ventured out to see these falls.  To think we missed out on this beautiful area for all these years is disappointing but like all things in life, it’s never too  late.  To get there take interstate 390 to Lexington Ave, follow east, turn left on Lake Ave, make right at next intersection onto Driving Park Ave.  The access path to this waterfall sits at the rear of “Maplewood Park and Rose Garden” the latter of  which we have visited in the past to enjoy the annual Rose Festival.  As an aside, the “Rose Festival” showcases over 3,000 rose bushes that include everything from the antique “Malmaison” to the recently-created hybrid “Princess Diana” along with peonies and perennials.  The park is beautiful when blooming in early June and the area becomes infused with their fragrance and bold colors.

Now back on topic.  The falls, which one shouldn’t really visit after dusk for safety reasons, has a path leading to several vantage points.  We ventured a bit off it to get a closer look of this spectacular place.  Like any photograph the true beauty escapes the richness that all the senses add.  The video does add the extra sense of sound.  The Lower Falls is a massive 110 foot tall cascade in a U-shaped gorge. It is beautiful!

Although there are references to the “Middle Falls” they don’t really exist due to a power plant which interrupted it’s flow.  The true beauty however is the “Lower Falls”.   Like all states, waterfalls have a history and this one is no different.  If you really want to get up close and in person you can trek down the “unofficial” path but beware it is not for the faint of heart.  We began to descend it however quickly reconsidered because we didn’t want you reading this post while we were recovering in intensive care, lol.  The view from the top was beautiful to us.  If any attempt it, we can’t wait to hear and hopefully not in the 911 section of the news.

Some interesting tidbits about Rochester and the area are,

  • Rochester students lined up 1,036 tacos in attempt to break the record for longest string of edible tacos.
  • George Eastman, the founder of Kodak, donated over $100 million towards higher education, most of which was distributed locally in Rochester. That’s the equivalent of $2 billion today.
  • The man who hit the first home run in a professional baseball game was from the Rochester area, Ross Barnes, in 1876.
  • America’s first thermometers were manufactured in Rochester in 1851 by David Kendall and George Taylor.

  13. It makes us happy Claremary knowing you are enjoying the post as much as we do preparing them. We too enjoy hearing the travels and stories of others that include their victories and victories in the making. For some reason we can’t wait to stick our noses in the center of a beautiful rose and sniff, lol.

  14. I love the pics. And the facts. It sounds like you are having fun being tour guides and since I love finding out more about places, I’m having fun, too! I used to oversee the rose garden at our local college, so I’m looking forward to the spring photos you take of your own rose garden.

  23. Wow Ann this is exciting to know. Isn’t it something how roses whether from the Netherlands or USA the fragrances and beauty are one and the same. We just got hit with about 18 inches of snow here so we can’t wait for them to appear.

  28. Thank you Sandra. We are pleased you found it good. It was so nice being there and filling all the senses with the moment. We have a few more post coming with falls that are nice. We were amazed at how many are in this region. I guess you never realize this until you start looking for them, lol. Like not knowing how many yellow Volkswagens are on the road until you buy one, lol

  30. Thank you. We’ll be sure and return in the spring to shoot the Rose Garden for you. Hopefully by then some camera manufacturer will create a way to add smell to the video, lol. Yes, you were right it was the lower falls and the mist and the sounds were incredible. We are so pleased you made time to let us know you liked it. Its amazing the sights that God has put for us to enjoy. Tomorrow the “High Falls” segment will come with some good shots and video.

  34. Thank you. Not sure what the oval thing was. It appeared as though it was at one time a walk way to the falls? Yes, it was like a horror movie as we attempted to traverse down it. It was a slip, slide and away moment with arms flailing, lol.

  35. Thank you, yes!!!! They are all so soothing to be at too. We have been having such fun doing this series on them. The cold front is for real. Last week 68 this week in the single digits at night and only touching double ones by afternoon. We went out early shooting more falls and we left in a blizzard that was so pretty. Can’t wait for spring!!!!

  37. Beautiful waterfalls! Was is it about them that is so attractive? One picture I can’t figure out is the light green-blue oval. What is that?

  39. The rose festival sounds wonderful, I love roses! Now back to the falls 😉 The picture with, I guess it’s the lower falls, (I’m basing that guess on the video) is just beautiful, even with the power plant 🙂 Of course, they are all beautiful but that one just spoke to me.
