Rochester, NY – Our Back-Yard part 7 of 14

Hello again.  It has been so nice hearing everyone’s wonderful comments on this series of articles about covering our journey around our hometown of Rochester, NY.  Today welcome to part 7.

So here we go with recent adventure to Corbett’s Glen Nature Park located just outside the hamlet of Penfield, NY.  This is just east, about 20 minutes of where we live.  Penfield is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 36,242 at the 2010 census. The town was incorporated in 1810 by the proprietor, Daniel Penfield, who purchased the town lands in 1795 and moved to the area in 1809.  It was founded in 1810.

To get to Corbett’s Glen Nature Park take interstate 490 to exit 22, head east on Penfield Rd. Cross the railroad tracks and Temple Sinai will be on your right. The parking lot is a few houses after the temple, across from Forest Hill Road.  It has 3 moderate waterfalls which you can visit with your pets year-round.   There is a great deal of history here folks and these falls are appealing.

We must confess however that for as many years we have lived here and driven by the entrance to this place we never made the time to check it out.  Again, isn’t it the truth about neglecting what is in our own backyard believing another’s is better.  Can any of you reading this post recall not visiting a place your hometown area is known for? It’s easy to happen, isn’t it?

This was truly an awesome experience for us.  As we traveled along the ¾ mile trail through the wooded area leading up to the falls the sites were magnificent.  The temps were a gorgeous 68 degrees, birds were chirping, squirrels acting twitter pated each excitingly announcing in their own way that Spring was on its way and off in the distance were the sounds of the falls increasing with each step we made.

When we arrived at the falls around 9 a.m. there was only one other couple there.  Folks this is such a beautiful area and the photographs, as typical, cannot do it justice.  There is something about being on scene to fill the senses with the glory of moment that photos/videos cannot capture…. yet.

We wondered about for a good couple hour basking in the beauty of the Corbett Glen Falls and Allen Creek which it generates from.  As the morning progressed many more people started coming and going, all enjoying this golden nugget laid waiting in Rochester, NY.

Before going further however we gotta tease you a bit with something else that happened just as we were about to leave this spectacular place.  In one of the below photographs taken upriver from the falls, through the hand cut stone train trestle archway you will see a white house with a wraparound front porch.  Well, you may have guessed it.  The owner of that home was outside picking up sticks in the yard.  Yup, we are going to stop right here without going into more detail about this rendezvous.  Hopefully you will come back on March 10th, for our next post when we’ll talk about this memorable moment captured in photo, audio and video.

Here are some more tidbits that when combined with a couple bucks you can get a cup of coffee, lol.

  • It’s against the law to throw a snowball towards someone’s head in Rochester.
  • The geography of Rochester was formed by sliding ice sheets, which stopped at the southern border thus creating a line of hills.
  • Over 2,000 people participated in the ‘world’s largest human flower’ at the Lilac festival, confirmed by Guinness World Records.

  20. This is awesome Brenda. So this recent series of post are a journey down past paths for you. We so enjoy the Fairport Canal Days Festival. Who knows, maybe we’ll catch a glimpse of you in the crowds of both events. There is some pretty territory around here. It is so nice to have you following along with us.

  24. A very interesting post. It is probably right that throwing a snowball at someone’s head should be against the law – can’t they be quite hard [I would think so if you left them overnight for example]. It is true that we often ignore what it right under our noses – glad you found this lovely place.

  32. My favorite picture is the one with the falls, bridge and tunnel all in one. The angle was such a perfect way to capture everything. Also, I have to start reading up on laws before I visit a place. Imagine being fined for throwing a snowball at someone!!! the nerve 😂

Isn’t it the truth though about when we are young we get so busy working, being a spouse, being a friend, collecting things, raising families etc., etc. And we do it all thinking we are the ones in control, lol. Kids do cause us to see the world in wonderful ways though don’t they.

  36. This was beautiful. And yes there were places here, where I live that it wasn’t until I had my son did I ever visit. Beautiful old historical places but, I never went and saw them. To busy, being young, working and having what I thought was fun. That waterfall is just breathtaking and those trees, oh my goodness. Thanks again for taking us with you 🙂 God Bless you

  48. Isn’t that something… a place in your own backyard and someone from across the pond sees your passport and comments on it. Maybe its time to take that tour and share it with us. You have planted the seed for us to check it out on our next tour that way. Our own backyards are amazing and we are seeing it. The place we went the other day is kind of like what you are saying. We had never been for whatever reason and as we were there taking photos we kept shaking our head in wonder as to why it took us so long to enjoy such a visit. Thanks for taking the time to let us hear your thoughts. It means a lot to us!

  49. Sounds like my kind of place! The one place near my home that stands out as being a place that everyone from just about everywhere visits, but I have yet to go, is the famous Jack Daniels Distillery. Jack Daniels is minutes from my house and we have yet to take a tour. I was in Italy back in 2000. When I gave my passport to the girl behind the counter, she said, “ Ahh, Tennessee, Jack Daniels”. Even people from across the pond have been there. Go figure!
