Good morning everyone.  Well it’s Tuesday, December 20^th and day 4 of our journey.  We woke to a beautiful sunrise at Buckhorne Country Store and Campground  with the temps in the low 50’s.  We took a nice long walk along Wilson Creek enjoying its sights and sounds.  From here it was back to shower and pack before heading out around 11 a.m.  As we were saying our goodbyes, Ray, the owner suggested we check out Douthat State Park  which was just 5 minutes up the road in Millboro, VA.  Are we ever glad we listened to his recommendation.  It was named one of the nation’s 10 best parks and on the National Register of Historic Places. It straddles Bath and Alleghany counties and is nestled in the Allegheny Mountains. The scenery was incredible as we wandered the grounds enjoying its serenity. They had an awesome suspension bridge that made your stomach flip a bit as you bounced across it.

From here we headed south along country roads through the little towns of Iron Gate, across the James River into Gala, Fincastle, Trinity, Daleville, Roanoke and Blacksburg.  As we were driving Audrey began reflecting on memories of the area when she had attended Radford University not far from where we were.  This is one of the places she had graduated from early in her life with a degree in business administration.

By this time it was around 5 p.m. and we were back on the road through Pulaski, Fort Chiswell and on into Wytheville, VA to spend the night at the Wytheville KOA.  On a historical note, Wytheville is a town in with a population of 8,235 and named after George Wythe, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, and mentor to Thomas Jefferson.  We only traveled 147 miles this day because of the many stops to enjoy old and new moments in time.

Now, usually KOA’s are not our first preference in places to stay due to a not so fun experience at one back in September when we were tenting through Michigan but we were ready to settle in for the night.  The sites were nice and clean as were the grounds and shower/bath facilities.  After a nice evening walk under an awesome canopy of stars, we were out in a matter of moments after our heads hit the pillow.
